Plants and animals share equal billing at Zoo Pilsen, whose full Czech name, Zoologická a botanická zahrada města Plzně, describes it as both a zoological and a botanical garden. Animal enclosures sit within planted grounds, so the plant collection is part of the visit rather than a backdrop.
The zoo dates from the 1920s and occupies a hillside site in Plzeň's Lochotín district. The sloping, wooded setting divides the grounds into a series of separate areas to walk between. Paths and changes of level are part of the experience, and comfortable shoes help.
With around half a million visitors a year, it is one of the busier attractions in western Bohemia. It suits families with children as well as visitors with an interest in gardens and plant life. It is large enough to fill most of a day for anyone who wants to see both the animals and the botanical side properly.
