Belvedere 21 occupies a building that began life in Brussels: Karl Schwanzer's modernist steel and glass pavilion, built as Austria's showroom for Expo 58. It was later moved to Vienna to house the Museum of the 20th Century, which earned it the nickname 20er Haus (House 20). The structure is now a listed heritage object in Austria.
Today the museum is devoted to contemporary art, film and music. Between 1979 and 2001 the building also served as a depository for contemporary artworks. From 2009 to 2011 the architect Adolf Krischanitz remodelled it, and it reopened as the 21er Haus, a name chosen for the 21st century. It took the name Belvedere 21 in 2018. The museum suits visitors interested in contemporary culture as well as those drawn to postwar architecture.
