As the leading museum of the Austrian Armed Forces, the Museum of Military History (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) reports directly to the Ministry of Defence and Sports rather than belonging to Austria's federal museums. It occupies a building designed by Theophil Hansen at the Arsenal in Vienna, and its history goes back to its founding in 1869.
The collection documents Austrian military affairs across a wide range of objects: weapons and armour, tanks and aeroplanes, uniforms and flags, paintings, medals and badges of honour, photographs, battleship models and documents. It draws around 170,000 visitors a year and suits anyone interested in military history, from arms and armour to the art and memorabilia of war.
