A former power station on the Paseo del Prado, converted by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, is home to CaixaForum Madrid. The building began as the Central del Mediodía, a power plant dating from the 1900s. It was rebuilt by Ferrovial between 2001 and 2007 and opened as an art center in 2008. On the square outside, the Vertical Garden by Patrick Blanc, a wall covered in living plants, is one of its best-known features.
The center belongs to the not-for-profit banking foundation la Caixa. Rather than centering on a fixed display, it hosts temporary art exhibitions alongside a program of cultural events.
