Founded in 1755, the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid, signed locally as Real Jardín Botánico, covers 8 hectares (about 20 acres). Its public entrance is on Plaza de Murillo, right next to the Prado Museum.
Besides being a public garden, it is a research centre and holds a herbarium, a collection of preserved plant specimens kept for scientific study. It is protected as a Historic Garden in Spain and is listed as a bien de interés cultural, the country's national heritage designation.
