Considered the oldest anthropology museum in Spain, the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología) was formally inaugurated on 29 April 1875, during the reign of Alfonso XII. It is an ethnographic museum and one of the National Museums of Spain, attached to the Ministry of Culture.
The building was designed by the architect Francisco de Cubas and is protected as a bien de interés cultural, Spain's heritage designation for cultural property. The museum stands near the Parque del Buen Retiro, directly opposite Atocha railway and metro station.
