For more than three and a half centuries, from 1621 to 1987, the building that houses the Museo Casa de Moneda served as the main mint of the New Kingdom of Granada, then of New Granada and modern-day Colombia. Coin minting moved to the Fábrica de Moneda in Ibagué in 1987, and the museum was founded in the former mint in 1996. The building is designated a National Monument of Colombia.
The Mint Museum is managed by the Bank of the Republic of Colombia and displays the bank's numismatic collection of around 18,600 objects. Alongside coins and banknotes, the collection includes medals, bonds, derivatives and other negotiable instruments, artwork, and printing instruments from many periods and regions of the world.
The museum is in the La Candelaria neighborhood and belongs to the Banrepcultural Network, together with the Botero Museum, the Gold Museum, the Luis Ángel Arango Library and the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum. It suits visitors interested in the history of money and the objects used to make it.
