The oldest and largest museum in Colombia, the National Museum of Colombia (Museo Nacional de Colombia) has gathered the country's history, art and culture under one roof since its founding in 1823. It sits in the Santa Fe locality of Bogotá, operates under the Colombian Ministry of Culture and is listed among the National Monuments of Colombia.
The collection numbers more than 20,000 pieces, from works of art to objects representing different periods of national history. Permanent exhibitions run from archaeological and ethnographic material dating back to 10,000 BC through to twentieth-century indigenous and Afro-Colombian art and culture. A room devoted to the founders and the New Kingdom of Granada displays imagery of the Liberators alongside other Spanish iconography, while the round room presents a series of oil paintings tracing the history of Colombian painting.
The museum's broad sweep suits visitors looking for a single overview of Colombia's past, from its earliest artefacts to the twentieth century.
