Chapultepec Zoo was the first institution outside China to breed giant pandas in captivity, and the first outside the United States to breed California condors. Its breeding work with threatened species also extends to Mexican wolves, with the first litter of cubs born to released wolves.
Known in Spanish as Zoológico de Chapultepec, the zoo lies within Chapultepec Park and is the best known zoo in Mexico, one of four near Mexico City. It houses almost 2,000 animals from more than 200 species.
The Mexican biologist Alfonso Luis Herrera founded the zoo on 6 July 1923. He funded it with donations from private citizens, government money from the Ministry of Agriculture and Development, and funds from the Society of Biological Studies.
