Founded in 1912 as a teaching collection for police academy students, the Civil Police Museum (Museu da Polícia Civil) opened to the public in the 1930s. Its exhibitions of documents and objects trace the work of Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police from colonial times onward.
The museum occupies a French eclectic style building constructed in 1910 by the architect Heitor de Mello. It is registered with the International Council of Museums as a scientific museum.
