With a herbarium of more than six million preserved specimens, among the largest in the world, the Geneva Botanic Garden (Jardin botanique de Genève) is both a public garden and a major scientific institution. Augustin Pyramus de Candolle founded it in 1817, and it is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance.
The grounds cover 28 hectares, and the living collections hold more than 11,000 taxa. A taxon is any named group of organisms, such as a species or a variety. Alongside the plants and the herbarium, the garden maintains a specialist library of more than 160,000 volumes, which reflects its role as a research centre as well as a place to walk among plants.
The garden recorded about 700,000 visits in 2023, which made it the most visited attraction in Geneva.
