Switzerland's only collection of its kind, the Musée Ariana, also called the Musée suisse de la céramique et du verre (Swiss Museum of Ceramics and Glass), is devoted entirely to ceramic and glass artwork. Its around 20,000 objects span the last 1,200 years and trace the historic, geographic, artistic and technological breadth of glass and ceramic making.
The building, put up between 1877 and 1884 with Neo-Classical and Neo-Baroque elements, stands on Avenue de la Paix near the Palace of Nations. It is a Swiss cultural property of national significance. The Swiss collector Gustave Revilliod built it for his private collection, named it after his mother, Ariane de la Rive, and later bequeathed it to the city of Geneva.
Since 1934 the museum has belonged to Geneva's association of art and history museums, led by the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire. Parts of the collection have since gone to other museums in exchange for new acquisitions, narrowing its focus to glass and ceramics. It reopened in 1993 after twelve years of building work.
