Some 400,000 posters make up the collection of the Danish Poster Museum (Det Danske Plakatmuseum), which is devoted to the history of poster art. The holdings cover every type of poster, from commercial advertising to wall art, and range from Danish work to designs from around the world. The exhibition hall presents classical Danish posters from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum sits within The Old Town, the open-air museum in central Aarhus. The entrance is a pavilion from the Danish National Exhibition of 1909, and behind it lies a modern two-storey interior designed by the architecture firm C. F. Møller.
The collection began with the Danish painter Peder Stougaard, who started collecting posters in 1972. At first his collection was mostly Danish, and it later grew to include posters from abroad through contacts with embassies and museums. He donated it to the museum when it was founded in 1993, and it remains at the core of the collection. The museum moved into its Old Town buildings in 2006.
