Set on the Aarhus University campus in the Midtbyen district, the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisk Museum) is both a public museum and a working research institution. Its research focuses on entomology, freshwater ecology, earth biology, fauna and bioacoustics, the study of sounds produced by animals.
The museum was founded in 1921 and draws more than 60,000 visitors a year. It is an independent institution funded by the Danish Ministry of Culture, Aarhus Municipality, Aarhus University and visitor income. Outside the city, it runs the Molslaboratoriet, a field laboratory and education centre in Mols Bjerge National Park on Djursland.
