Six centuries of Flemish and Belgian painting, from Jan van Eyck to Marcel Broodthaers, make up the collection of the Groeningemuseum, the municipal art museum of Bruges. Founded in 1929, it stands on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey.
Early Netherlandish paintings are among the museum's highlights, alongside works by Renaissance and Baroque masters. The collection continues with a selection of 18th- and 19th-century neoclassical and realist painting, milestones of Belgian symbolism and modernism, and masterpieces of Flemish Expressionism. Many works from the city's collection of post-war modern art complete the survey.
The breadth of the collection suits visitors who want to follow the course of painting in Flanders and Belgium, from the age of van Eyck through to post-war modern art.
