The tombs of the Marquis of Dai and his wife, Xin Zhui, at Mawangdui are the source of the Hunan Museum's best-known holdings. Finds from these burials are among more than 180,000 objects in the collection of Hunan's provincial museum. Signs may show its Chinese name, 湖南博物院.
The museum stands at No. 50 Dongfeng Lu in Changsha, the provincial capital, beside the Revolutionary Martyrs' Park. The site covers about 50,000 square metres, with around 20,000 square metres of buildings. The architect Arata Isozaki is credited with the museum's design.
Built in 1951, the museum first opened to the public in July 1956. It closed in 2012 for a major renovation and expansion and reopened in November 2017.
