Founded in 1802, the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum) is the national museum for the history, art and archaeology of Hungary. Its scope reaches beyond the country's present borders to include regions such as Transylvania, which suits visitors interested in the Hungarian past as a whole. International art is not part of its collection, which is held separately by the Hungarian National Gallery.
The museum occupies a Neoclassical building in Budapest's eighth district, purpose-built for it between 1837 and 1847 to designs by the architect Mihály Pollack.
