Built over three centuries, from the 17th to the 19th, the Kyiv Fortress (Київська фортеця, Kyivska fortetsia), also called the New Pechersk Fortress, is a complex of fortifications spread across several districts of the city, including Pechersk, Lysa Hora, Podil and Zvirynets. The Hospital fortification is the main structure associated with the fortress and houses its Historic and Architectural Museum.
Construction began after the 1654 Council in Pereiaslav, on the site of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a monastery that was already fortified. The complex occupies the hills of the high right bank of the Dnieper, bounded by the Klov ravine to the north and by the slopes of the Lybid River valley to the south and west. It once belonged to the extensive system of western fortresses of the Russian Empire, and most of its surviving structures now carry historic designation.
