Strasbourg-born artist Tomi Ungerer is the subject of the Musée Tomi Ungerer, which also serves as an international centre for illustration. Opened in November 2007, it holds more than 24,000 pieces. These are chiefly graphic works by Ungerer, shown alongside drawings by some of his best-known colleagues, among them Saul Steinberg, Ronald Searle and André François. Ungerer's large collection of antique toys is also part of the museum, which regularly stages special exhibitions.
The museum occupies one half of the former Villa Greiner, a spacious villa built in 1884, and its three floors are arranged by theme. The ground floor covers Ungerer's work as a children's book illustrator, and the first floor his political caricatures and satirical cartoons. The basement, which children may not enter, shows his erotic and semi-pornographic drawings.
Families can keep to the ground and first floors, while adult visitors can see the full range of Ungerer's work.
