Modelled on London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Decorative Arts (Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas) traces the evolution of the so-called minor or industrial arts: furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles. Founded in 1912 as the National Museum of Industrial Arts, it is one of the oldest museums in Madrid. It is also one of the National Museums of Spain, attached to the Ministry of Culture.
Its collection of roughly 70,000 pieces fills 62 exhibition rooms inside a palace near the Retiro gardens. The holdings are particularly strong in the 16th and 17th centuries. The museum suits visitors interested in historic design and craftsmanship rather than painting or sculpture.
The museum stands within Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art, south of the Alcalá Gate on the western side of Buen Retiro Park. It received a little over 70,000 visitors in 2017.
