Museum Erotica described itself as illustrating some of the sex life of Homo sapiens, and it took a historical, holistic approach to its subject. Director and photographer Ole Ege and business manager Kim Clausen founded it in 1992 at Vesterbrogade 31. In 1994 it reopened at Købmagergade 24, just off Strøget, Copenhagen's main shopping street. The museum closed in March 2009, after Clausen's sudden death in 2008 and the financial recession. By then it claimed around a million visitors.
The route through the museum ran in roughly chronological order, and extensive written commentary in English and Danish accompanied the exhibits. Displays covered the beginnings of erotic photography, a room of Playboy centerfolds and other American pinups, and a special exhibition on Marilyn Monroe. One of the final rooms placed a sofa opposite a wall of small television screens, each showing a different pornographic video. The selection reflected the eclectic character of the museum as a whole.
