A fanciful Neo-Baroque spire, 90 metres tall and the third highest tower in Copenhagen, rises above Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, known locally as Nikolaj Kunsthal. The center occupies the former St. Nicholas Church, one of the city's oldest churches and an architectural landmark listed on the Danish national register of protected monuments.
Instead of a permanent collection, the center presents contemporary art inside the old church building. It stands on Nikolaj Plads, a few steps from Amagertorv and the Strøget shopping street, so it suits visitors who want to combine new art with one of central Copenhagen's historic buildings.
