Founded in 1958 as the Modern Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade (Muzej savremene umetnosti) was one of the first museums of its kind in the world. Since 1965 it has occupied a building in the Ušće neighbourhood of New Belgrade that is regarded as a masterpiece of the architects Ivan Antić and Ivanka Raspopović. Their short-lived but highly successful partnership also produced the 21 October Museum in Šumarice Memorial Park in Kragujevac. The museum is protected in Serbia as a Monument of Culture.
The collection holds more than 35,000 works of art produced since 1900 in Serbia and Yugoslavia. That focus suits visitors interested in the region's art from the twentieth century onward. Alongside its own holdings, the museum organizes international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
