Parts of a US F-117 stealth aircraft, downed by a Serbian S-125 Neva/Pechora missile system, are among the best-known exhibits at Belgrade's Military Museum (Vojni muzej). Outside, decommissioned tanks, howitzers and armoured cars line the walls and paths leading to the museum from two directions. Some were captured from retreating Nazi and Axis forces by the Red Army and Yugoslav Partisans during World War II. The museum stands within the walls of Belgrade Fortress, in Kalemegdan Park at the confluence of the Sava and Danube.
Founded in 1878, the museum holds more than 3,000 items in a single long hall that runs from ancient through medieval to modern times. Roman swords, Greek helmets and daggers, Serbian heavy knight's armour, crossbows and armoured gloves give way to firearms and soldiers' uniforms, with dioramas providing historical context. Exhibits on the 1999 NATO actions against Serbia cover cluster bombs, depleted uranium and graphite bombs. Labels are in Serbian, in both Cyrillic and Latin script, and in English.
