Large and small statues, busts and paintings made in Bulgaria between 1944 and 1989 fill the Museum of Socialist Art (Музей на социалистическото изкуство). Its collection spans the period from the establishment of the People's Republic of Bulgaria to the fall of communism, making it a natural stop for visitors interested in the art and history of the communist era.
The museum covers 7,500 square metres in the Sofia suburb known as Red Star and is divided into three parts. A park holds sculpture installations drawn from the communist period, an exhibition hall displays paintings and easel works, and a video hall screens films and newsreels related to the era.
The museum opened on 19 September 2011 amid controversy over its name. It was initially proposed as the Museum of Totalitarian Art.
