Sweden's relationship with alcohol, from how it is made to how it is drunk, is the subject of the Museum of Spirits (Spritmuseum) on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. Founded in 1967, it covers the country's wine and spirits history and the manufacture of alcohol, with permanent and temporary exhibitions on Swedish drinking culture.
The museum has three exhibition venues. The centrepiece is the permanent, interactive exhibition Sweden: Spirits of a Nation (Spritlandet Sverige). Its displays have included older production and bottling equipment, labels from historic Swedish wines and spirits, material on Swedish drinking habits, objects from ancient wine history, and the complete interior of a wine shop from before the Systembolaget monopoly, the state-run alcohol retailer.
The museum also works as an art gallery. It houses and displays the Absolut Art Collection, so visitors interested in art as well as social history will find something here.
