The history of African descendants in Peru is the focus of the National Afro-Peruvian Museum, which acquires, preserves and exhibits objects connected to that history. It occupies the House of the Thirteen Coins on Ancash Street in Lima's historic centre and opened in 2009.
Nine permanent exhibition halls trace the beginnings of the trade in enslaved Africans in Latin America and the slave trade within Peru. The relics on display span the colonial period through to the beginning of the Republic.
