Some 800,000 items, from world-famous archaeological finds to relics of the 20th-century Ukrainian national liberation movement, make up the collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (Національний музей історії України), styled MIST. Its displays trace the country's history from ancient times to the present, and it ranks among Ukraine's leading museums.
Roughly 22,000 objects are usually on permanent display. Alongside archaeology, the museum is known internationally for its coins, ethnography and weapons. Decorative and applied arts, manuscripts, prints, paintings and drawings round out the collection, which particularly suits visitors interested in archaeology, numismatics and the long sweep of Ukrainian history.
The museum was founded in 1899 by Vikentiy Khvoyka, Danylo Shcherbakivskyi and Mykola Biliashivsky. Its home is protected as an architectural monument of local significance and as a monument of urban planning of local importance.
