The largest collection of Uruguayan artworks belongs to the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, the National Museum of Visual Arts, which opened on 10 December 1911 in Parque Rodó, Montevideo.
The collection covers many of the country's best-known names, including Juan Manuel Blanes, Pedro Figari, Carlos Federico Sáez, Joaquín Torres García, Rafael Barradas, José Cúneo and Olga Piria. It also includes work by Pablo Serrano, an artist who lived in Montevideo for twenty years. Alongside the permanent holdings, the museum stages temporary shows, often touring exhibitions of work by foreign artists.
