The first modern dwelling in Uruguay to open as a house museum, the Vilamajó House Museum (Museo Casa Vilamajó) occupies the home that the architect Julio Vilamajó built for his family in Montevideo in 1930. The house is a work of modern architecture and is protected as a Cultural Heritage Monument.
The museum was created by the School of Architecture at the University of the Republic, in agreement with the Ministry of Education and Culture, which owns the property. It opened to the public in May 2012. It serves as a research and promotion center devoted to Vilamajó's life and work, and to architecture and design as disciplines open to society. That focus makes it best suited to visitors with an interest in architecture and design.
