Mounted dinosaur skeletons and a major collection of dinosaur fossils are the centrepiece of the National Natural History Museum of China (国家自然博物馆), which holds more than 200,000 specimens in Beijing's Dongcheng district. Its collections span paleontology, ornithology, mammals and invertebrates. The main displays are in the Tian Jiabing Building, and about 8,000 of the museum's 24,000 square metres are given over to exhibition space. The museum also carries out scientific research in these fields and has published the bimonthly journal Da Ziran, meaning Great Nature, since 1980.
The museum was founded in 1951 as the Central Museum of Natural History by the Central Ministry of Culture and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1962 it passed to the Beijing city government and became the Beijing Museum of Natural History. It took its current name in June 2023. Despite the title, it is a municipal museum under the Beijing Academy of Science and Technology rather than a national museum of China.
