The world's first nocturnal zoo, the Night Safari shows its animals after dark in 35 hectares of secondary rainforest in Mandai, beside Singapore Zoo and Upper Seletar Reservoir. It ranks among Singapore's most popular tourist attractions, drawing about 1.3 million visitors a year.
The park houses more than 900 animals from over 100 species, and about two in five of those species are threatened. It is one of five parks in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, alongside Singapore Zoo, Bird Paradise, River Wonders and Rainforest Wild ASIA, all managed by Mandai Wildlife Group.
The idea for a nocturnal park came in the 1980s from Ong Swee Law, a former executive chairman of Singapore Zoo. Built at a cost of 63 million Singapore dollars, the Night Safari opened on 26 May 1994 and welcomed its 11 millionth visitor in 2007.
