A long indoor water feature, the Water Mall, runs through the centre of the Queensland Art Gallery, linking galleries in Robin Gibson's modernist building beside the Brisbane River. Opened in 1982 as part of the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank, the building is now one half of QAGOMA, paired with the nearby Gallery of Modern Art.
The gallery focuses on historical Australian art, Indigenous Australian art and international works. Its best-known pieces include R. Godfrey Rivers' Under the jacaranda, a Brisbane scene painted in 1903, and Picasso's early La Belle Hollandaise, whose purchase in 1959 drew wide public attention. The collection also covers Asian and Pacific art, a strength the institution has developed over several decades.
The gallery was founded in 1895 and occupied several temporary homes before moving to South Bank. Today it draws more than half a million visitors a year.
