Australia's largest gallery of modern and contemporary art sits on Kurilpa Point beside the Brisbane River. Locals and signs call it GOMA. Opened in 2006 and designed by the Sydney firm Architectus, the building is long and light-filled, with expansive glass walls and broad open spaces that suit large-scale installations and frame views over the water.
GOMA forms one half of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, alongside the older Queensland Art Gallery a short walk away. Its collection centres on contemporary art from Australia, Asia and the Pacific, including significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander work. The gallery is closely associated with the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, a long-running survey that has shaped its collecting focus.
The building also houses the Australian Cinémathèque, with dedicated cinemas for film programs, and a Children's Art Centre with hands-on projects for younger visitors. It draws more than 600,000 visitors a year and makes a natural pairing with the neighbouring institutions of Brisbane's cultural precinct.
