Baron Pasquale Revoltella left his house on Piazza Venezia to the city of Trieste, along with all the artworks, furniture and books inside it. That bequest became the Revoltella Museum (Museo Revoltella), a modern art gallery founded in 1872.
The museum is also a historic house museum, so the baron's residence and its original contents are part of what visitors see. The building was designed by the architect Friedrich Hitzig and is protected as Italian national heritage. The collection numbers about 700 works.
