Around four thousand animals of nearly five hundred species live at Riga Zoo, which sits on the western bank of Ķīšezers lake in the Mežaparks neighbourhood, beside Mežaparks park. The city-owned zoo was founded in 1912 and draws roughly 250,000 to 300,000 visitors a year.
Its holdings extend well beyond Riga. Since 1996 the zoo has run a branch called Cīruļi in Kalvene parish, Liepāja district, which covers 135 hectares.
