The armour worn by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and his son Philip II is the centrepiece of the Royal Armoury of Madrid, or Real Armería, a collection ranked alongside the Imperial Armory of Vienna as one of the finest in the world. It brings together the personal arms of the Kings of Spain, built up around the arms and equipment these two monarchs used.
Alongside royal armour, the collection includes military weapons and diplomatic works of art such as tapestries, paintings and trophies. Its origins go back at least to the death of Charles V on 21 September 1558, when the armoury began to receive preferential treatment, and Philip II is credited as its founder. The collection suits visitors interested in arms and armour, military history and the Spanish monarchy.
