Founded in 1616 by Queen Margaret of Austria, wife of Philip III, the Royal Convent of La Encarnación (Real Monasterio de la Encarnación) still belongs to an enclosed order of Recollet Augustine nuns, yet its building is open to the public under the administration of Patrimonio Nacional.
Royal patronage left the convent well endowed with wealth, and it mainly took in women from noble families. The baroque building was designed by the architect Alberto de la Madre de Dios and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's heritage designation for its most significant monuments.
