Founded in 1890 as the Canadian Military Institute, the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI) grew from General Sir William Dillon Otter's plan to give Canada's defence forces a library, a museum and a club, and to gather and preserve their records. It remains a private members' organization focused on military history, defence studies and international affairs, supported by fees, donations and the volunteer work of its members. Its motto is Fidelis Permanere, Latin for "to remain faithful", and its colonel in chief is Princess Alexandra.
The institute's original headquarters at 426 University Avenue dates from 1907. A library designed by William Craven Vaux Chadwick followed in 1908, and the building was expanded in 1912 and 1935. In 2007 its facade was reconstructed according to archaeological records. In 2012 Governor General David Johnston laid the cornerstone for a 42-storey condominium and mixed-use project.
