Every surviving sculptural fragment of the Parthenon in Athens appears together at the Skulpturhalle Basel, reproduced as casts and arranged to show how the pieces were originally placed on the temple. This Parthenon Project sits within a collection of around 2,000 cast replicas of antique sculpture, the largest of its kind in Switzerland. Because many original works are split among different museums, the casts let scattered parts be reunited into complete reconstructions. Architectural models at a scale of 1:20 are also on display.
The collection began in 1830 and moved often. It entered the Museum an der Augustinergasse in 1849 and a purpose-built wing of the Basel Kunsthalle in 1887. It went into storage in 1927 and to a disused factory in 1940, and gained its own building in 1963. It tripled in size between 1985 and 2010 and has been managed by the Antikenmuseum Basel since 1961. The museum is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance.
