Modelled on the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, signed as Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo or simply MAM, was founded in 1948 by Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho and Yolanda Penteado. It stands in Ibirapuera Park.
The collection holds more than 4,000 works. Among the artists represented are Anita Malfatti, Alfredo Volpi, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Aldo Bonadei, Mario Zanini and José António da Silva, alongside Joan Miró, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. The museum has also served as a place of learning, and the painter Sylvia Martins is among those who studied there.
