Tracing South African Jewry back to its roots in Lithuania and elsewhere, the South African Jewish Museum tells the story of the community's life, history and identity. Its displays follow that story forward to the part Jewish South Africans have played in the country's society and their contributions to a wide range of fields.
The museum stands in the grounds of Gardens Shul, a synagogue in the downtown Cape Town neighbourhood of Gardens. It shares a complex with the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre and the Gardens Jewish Community Centre, which houses the Jacob Gitlin Library. The Iziko South African National Gallery and the Houses of Parliament are close by. The museum was founded by the late philanthropist Mendel Kaplan.
