Sweden's national centre for architecture and design shares Rafael Moneo's 1998 building on Skeppsholmen with Moderna Museet, and much of its space sits in a converted nineteenth-century naval drill hall. On signs it appears as ArkDes, short for Statens centrum för arkitektur och design.
The centre began in 1962 as the Swedish Museum of Architecture and took on design as well in 2013. Its collections hold drawings, models and photographs from the archives of Swedish architects, making it a key record of how the country's buildings, towns and homes have been planned. Exhibitions use this material alongside broader themes in contemporary architecture and design.
ArkDes draws around 800,000 visitors a year. It suits anyone curious about Swedish architecture and the built environment, and it pairs easily with a visit to Moderna Museet under the same roof.
