A restored narrow gauge steam locomotive, the original engine that hauled equipment up from the old cableway at Kasteelspoort, is the centrepiece of the Waterworks Museum. It stands high on the northern side of Table Mountain, between the Woodhead and Hely-Hutchinson Reservoirs.
The museum records the building of the dams on Table Mountain through memorabilia from their construction. Alongside the locomotive are original equipment, hand tools, instruments and photographs from the works. The collection will appeal most to visitors with an interest in engineering and the mountain's dam-building history.
The museum was founded in 1972 by Terence Timoney, a retired waterworks engineer.
