Built in 1961 to monitor nuclear explosions and fallout across Yorkshire in the event of nuclear war, the York Cold War Bunker is a two-storey, semi-subterranean building in the Holgate area of York. It was one of about 30 such bunkers around the United Kingdom.
Throughout its operational life, from 1961 to 1991, the bunker served as the regional headquarters and control centre for the Royal Observer Corps's No. 20 Group YORK. It is now a scheduled monument, and English Heritage opened it as a tourist attraction in 2006.
The building has been fully restored. Inside are the air filtration and generating plant, a kitchen and canteen, dormitories, radio and landline communication equipment, and specialist 1980s computers. A fully equipped operations room still holds its vertical illuminated perspex maps.
