More than 50,000 ancient and medieval coins, Buddhist sculptures from the Gandhara period and exhibits on the 1971 Liberation War all belong to the Bangladesh National Museum (বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় জাদুঘর), the national repository of the country's cultural and historical artifacts. Its displays span the prehistoric era to contemporary history, drawn from a collection of about 94,000 objects.
The museum, in the Shahbag area of Dhaka, has four departments: ethnography and decorative art, history and classical art, natural history, and world civilization. It suits visitors interested in coins, Buddhist sculpture or the history of Bangladesh's independence.
The institution began as the Dhaka Museum, established in 1913 and opened to the public in 1914 with just 379 objects. After Bangladesh's independence in 1971 it was reorganized as the Bangladesh National Museum, incorporating parts of the former Dhaka Museum, and it was formally inaugurated in its present form in 1983.
