Covering 186 acres in Dhaka's Mirpur section, Bangladesh National Zoo (বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় চিড়িয়াখানা) is the largest zoo in the country. It holds a mix of native and non-native animals and draws about three million visitors a year, roughly 10,000 on an ordinary day and more at weekends and on holidays.
The zoo opened in 1974 and is run by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. It was known as Dhaka Zoo until February 2015, when it took its current name, so older signs and references may still use the earlier one. The zoo has also drawn criticism for poor conditions for its animals and for corruption among its officials.
