Giant bamboo grows under the glass of the Great Tropical Greenhouse (Großes Tropenhaus), the best-known part of a 42-hectare garden with more than 20,000 plant species. Glasshouses covering 6,000 square metres include the Cactus Pavilion and the Pavilion Victoria, where orchids and carnivorous plants grow alongside the giant water lily Victoria amazonica.
Outdoors, about 13 hectares of plantings are arranged by geographical origin, and an arboretum covers roughly 14 hectares more. The Botanical Museum, a large scientific library and the Herbarium Berolinense are attached to the garden. The herbarium is the largest in Germany, with more than 3.5 million preserved specimens.
The Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum Berlin was laid out between 1897 and 1910 under Adolf Engler on the Royal Domain of Dahlem. It was long known as the Dahlem Botanical Garden, though the site now lies in Lichterfelde West. Today it belongs to the Free University of Berlin, is protected as a heritage garden, and draws about half a million visitors a year.
