The Swedish royal family lives at Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms slott), yet the palace is also open to the public and is a major tourist attraction. It stands on the island of Lovön in Ekerö Municipality, Stockholm County.
Construction began in 1662, and the palace is built in the Baroque style, with Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and Nicodemus Tessin the Younger as its architects. During much of the 18th century it served as a regular summer residence of the Swedish royal court.
The palace forms part of the Royal Domain of Drottningholm, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The World Heritage property also takes in the Drottningholm Palace Theatre, the Chinese Pavilion, the palace gardens and other parts of the surrounding royal domain.
