The Earth Sciences Museum (Museu de Ciências da Terra) occupies a building put up in 1907 for the National Exposition of Brazil, where it served as the States Pavilion. Unlike many exhibition structures, it was intended from the outset to be permanent. It was also part of the 1908 exhibition marking the centenary of the opening of Brazil's ports.
Today the former pavilion houses a geological museum in Rio de Janeiro, with a collection of minerals, fossils and other geological exhibits. It suits visitors with an interest in rocks, fossils and the science of the Earth, as well as those drawn to the city's early twentieth-century exhibition architecture.
